Don’t get smoked out this winter
When sourcing wood for the winter, whether to burn in our log burners or on an open fire, do enough of us think about the quality of the wood we are buying? Is buying cheap and unseasoned wood not only a false economy but bad for our stoves, chimneys and the environment?
Let’s start with the fundamentals. If you want your wood to burn hot and efficiently it has to be dry and preferably a hardwood. If the water content of your firewood is too high the heat will not combust the wood efficiently. This results in a fire that takes much longer to get roaring, and more importantly, a fire that creates too much smoke.
With this in mind we take a look at DEFRA’s advice on how to avoid smoke and on the type of wood you should be burning:
1. Buy ‘Ready to Burn’ fuel if you want to burn immediately. Always look for the logo as a guarantee of good quality dry wood. http://woodsure.co.uk/firewood-ready-to-burn/
2. Season freshly chopped wood before burning. Wet or unseasoned wood, often sold in nets, is cheaper to buy, but it needs to be seasoned (dried) before burning. Wet wood contains moisture which creates smoke and harmful particulates when burned. This can damage your stove and chimney. It also means you’re losing out on heat for your home. If it is freshly chopped, let it dry FOR 2 YEARS
